Concerning the Clinic
Our clinic—a collaborative effort from the Neurology Department, Heart Center, Division of Hematology and Oncology and MassGeneral Hospital for kids Pediatric Hematology & Oncology—is among the couple of available within the U . s . States. We’ve knowledge of evaluating and treating conditions for example:
- Disorders associated with hereditary heart disease both in adult and pediatric patients (e.g. patent foramen ovale [PFO] or septal defects). Pediatric people are evaluated through the MassGeneral Hospital for Children’s Pediatric Stroke Service
- Stroke associated with PFO, dilated cardiomyopathies, cardiac valvular illnesses or paradoxical emboli (a clot in the right side from the heart)
- PFO and migraine
- Conditions and arteriopathies associated with both heart and vascular system
- Peripheral venous thrombotic disorders (e.g. May-Thurner syndrome)
- Cerebral venous sinus thromboses
- Clotting disorders (e.g. antiphospholipid antibody syndrome
A Clinical & Research Concentrate on PFO
Ferdinando Buonanno, MD, among the world’s leading experts in PFO, founded the Cardio-Neurology Clinic in the year 2006. In 2002 also, he cofounded the Pediatric Stroke Service, that they now codirects with Eric Grabowski, MD, SCD.
PFO continues to be Dr. Buonanno’s clinical and research section of focus since 1998. He and Dr. MingMing Ning have printed numerous important papers about this condition, including :
- “An electrocardiographic qualifying criterion for proper diagnosis of patent foramen ovale connected with ischemic stroke”
- “Contrast M-mode power Doppler ultrasound within the recognition of right-to-left shunts: utility of submandibular internal carotid artery recording”
Dr. Buonanno and MingMing Ning, MD, function as codirectors in our clinic. Dr. Ning also established and today directs the Clinical Proteomics Research Center (CPRC) at Mass General.
Backed through the National Institutes of Health, the CPRC is exploring clinical applications for proteomic technology (which examines the functions of specific proteins in cells). Among its ongoing studies is Clinical Proteomic Research for that Brain (“CPR” around the Brain), which aims to recognize biomarkers that may allow us to determine individualized treating PFO patients.
The Cardio-Neurology Clinic and CPRC are dedicated to understanding nerve disorders associated with, or connected with, heart disease for example PFO—and developing more efficient methods to taking care of patients.
